U.S. Healthcare
Unlike the UK's NHS, there is no national healthcare scheme
operating in the U.S. All healthcare has to be paid for, so it is
imperative that you have a solid health insurance policy in place
from the moment you enter the U.S. on an immigrant or non-immigrant
visa. If you are on 'vacation' at your second home in Florida then
your home country holiday/travel insurance policy might cover you,
although it is recommended that you read the fine print. For stays
on most visas, your holiday insurance will not cover you, leaving
you in the position of having to pay a premium for U.S. healthcare
or having to return to your home country at your own cost for
treatment.
It is advisable to take out a healthcare insurance policy in your
home country before you leave, although there are some U.S.
companies that do specialize in offering insurance packages to
foreign nationals entering the United States. What you must be aware
of though are policies that are actually medical discount schemes
rather than full coverage insurance policies. Sometimes, you'll need
to look past the glossy promises and make sure that it covers you
for every eventuality. The last thing you want to do is end up
purchasing such a discount scheme and then being hit with the
shortfall not covered by the policy when you need treatment.
